TRANSLATING
Abstract
The translation of the OT into African languages is on the increase. OT scholars and translators are discussing the problems of translating names that refer to God and his attributes. In this article I argue that such discussions should be based on a theoretical frame of reference. I also claim that African peoples possess theological tradition that can provide rich sources of illumination in the search for ways of translating divine names or attributes. The paper concludes by demonstrating how this can be achieved by using a case from an African language.Authors retain copyright and grant the Journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this Journal.
