Abstract

The gospel of Mark and the methodological challenges which this text proses to its interpreters, have been the focus of Cilliers Breytenbach’s research for considerable time now.  Since his doctoral dissertation (Nachfolge und Zukunftserwartung nach Markus 1984), in which he developed a text theoretical approach to include both the synchronic and diachronic dimensions of the text, he has explored further aspects of the gospel.  In this study, he analyzes Mark on the assumption that we are dealing with a narrative text and then proceeds to evaluate its narrative qualities with regard to the composition of the gospel.
