THE ROLE OF MUSIC IN DEVOTIONAL LIFE
Abstract
Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), Dean of St Patrick’s, Ireland, author of Gulliver’s Travels, to Lady Cartaret:“I know nothing of music, madam. I would not give a farthing for all the music in the Universe. For my own part I would rather say my prayers without it; but as long as it is thought by the skilful to contribute to the dignity of Public Worship, by the blessing of God it shall never be disgraced by me, nor I hope by any of my successors ….”Authors retain copyright and grant the Journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this Journal.
