Abstract

Christians living along the south-west coastline of Asia at the end of the first century experienced, among other things, ethic, cultural and spiritual deprivation. The primary questions that Christians asked were: 'Who is in control of history? Does God see the tragic events in the world? The author of Revelations is writing a crisis text in which he comforts the readers.  Using the metaphor of the seven eyes of the seven Spirits' the author indicates that the Holy Spirit is, inter alia, the Spirit of perception.  He is the eyes of God, of the Lamb, of the Church and of the believer.  He sees all things in time and space - both the good and the bad.  This is the consolation.
