Abstract
The relevance of biblical perspectives for contemporary developments in the church is underlined by the contributions to this issue. In the first, the question of the unity of the church is discussed against the background of the request of Portuguese-speaking members of the Dutch Reformed Church to establish an autonomous church. Jonker gives theological and biblical reasons why this should not be allowed to happen, and by doing so, offers an important contribution to a debate which is of special importance for the coming General Synod of the DRC later this year. The second contribution discusses basic aspects of the hermeneutics of liberation theology – a subject increasingly gaining interest in South Africa – as part of its overall methodological approach. The author shows how the hermeneutical presuppositions have a decisive influence on the way the Bible is read and understood in this context, and highlights the challenge which this approach poses to all Christians in the South African context.Downloads
