UNFREEDOM, THE HOLY SPIRIT AND DEVELOPMENT: ON BEING CHURCH

  • Adrian Roux University of KwaZulu-Natal

Abstract

This paper argues that the fact that the church appears in the Creed as part of the third article (to do with the Holy Spirit) is crucial in understanding the role of the church in the face of "development" concerns such as poverty, environmental degration, and HIV/Aids - which Amartya Sen characterises as "unfreedom". To argue that the church is the place where the Spirit is at work implies two important points: 1) The true church is characterised by the work of the Spirit; and that, 2) the work of the Spirit properly understood will draw the church into the concerns of "development".
