Abstract

Hope, the expectation of or desire for something (good/better) to happen in the future, is an universal human phenomenon. But what do people hope for? In Xhosa there is a saying 'to bear children is to extend oneself' (ukuzala kukuzolula): children are there to provide for one in future times of need.
