Abstract
People involved in the teaching of Religious Instruction and Biblical Studies should have a clear picture of the child they have to teach, thereby improving the effectiveness of their teaching. The aim of this paper is to describe the religious development of the child on his path towards adulthood. A psycho-pedagogical perspective is applied, as it entails a child in an educational situation. However, contributions from related disciplines such as psychology, theology and the psychology of religion are also incorporated. In the religious development of the child certain stages can be distinguished, I e the first years, the pre-school years, middle childhood and adolescence. Each of these has its specific characteristics, its possibilities and limitations.
