BYBELKUNDE: TEOLOGIE OP DIE MARKPLEIN. OOR DIE IDENTITEIT VAN DIE VAK.

Abstract

Biblical studies: Theology in the market place This article deals with the problem of Biblical Studies in South Africa having to find an identity vis-à-vis ecclesiastical theology.  The article proposes that such an identity should not be sought by means of a methodological approach to the Bible, which differs from ecclesiastical theology.  Nor should Biblical Studies try to be the henchman of a specific confessional tradition. Biblical Studies should be a fully fledged theological enterprise on its own, developing a truly ecumenical theology for the benefit of society at large.  Biblical Studies should take responsibility for the Christian tradition within the context of social, political and economic spheres whereas ecclesiastical theology should lay its emphasis on cultic and kerugmatic aspects.  The assumption underlying this article is that the undeniable pluralization of modern society should be recognized by theology and an effective division of labour should result from this recognition.
