Abstract

Many of us do not see God in our suffering as we have mistaken notions of who God is and of how God interacts with us. If we are to see God in our suffering, we need a new understanding of who God is. Valuable insights into the nature of God and the nature of the Christian life can be obtained through a study of lament psalms. Suffering is seen to be part of the normal human condition and can lead us into a richer walk with God. This requires that suffering be processed, which can be done by practising lament. This paper includes some examples of “ordinary people” processing their pain through composing their own laments.
