PAUL’S DAMASCUS EXPERIENCE AS REFLECTED IN GALATIANS 1: CALL OR CONVERSION?

Abstract

The question of Paul’s call or conversion is still an unresolved problem, because of, among other things, the lack of conceptual clarity in the debate. By using the conversion model of Berger and Luckmann, it is argued that Paul’s Damascus experience can indeed be seen as a conversion experience. That opens the way to understanding Paul’s reference to that experience in Galatians 1 as a post-conversion autobiographical account which has important consequences for the use of Paul’s life, as well as the history of early Christianity.
