FULFILLING THE NEEDS OF FIRST YEAR BIBLICAL STUDIES STUDENTS AT UNISA
Abstract
This paper gives a profile of the first year Biblical Studies students at the University of South Africa (UNISA), showing the multi-dimensional composition of the student body and the demands it places on the teaching and learning processes. Different value systems and philosophical viewpoints challenge the academic and teaching skills of this correspondence institution. Maintaining the academic standards implies reconsidering the mission of the university and especially of the Faculty, in the light of its African context, and adapting the teaching strategy to be able to contextualize its study material by making use of cultural hermeneutics, which include cross-cultural communication. To improve its pass rate, the Faculty will have to improve critical thinking amongst its students.Authors retain copyright and grant the Journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this Journal.
