Abstract

The problematic nature of the relationship indicative/imperative in Pauline ethics: certain aspects of the discussion since 1924Bultmann (1924) has pointed to the crucial importance of the relationship between the indicative in order to understand Pauline ethics. Viewpoints regarding this relationship have been debated extensively in studies related to Pauline ethics. A survey of the current debate has led to the conclusion that the relationship between the indicative and the imperative - which is basic to Pauline ethics - is closely connected to themes central to his theology: his message of justification, faith, and the gospel as the power of God, his eschatology, Christology and pneumatology.
