Abstract

The contributions to this special edition were originally presented as papers at the first Consultation on Contextual Hermeneutics organized by the Centre for Contextual Hermeneutics at Stellenbosch during April 1991. The aim was to explore the concept of contextuality and to discuss the most recent results of researchers working in this field. We were very fortunate to have as special Professor Daniel Patte of Vanderbilt University. As leaders of a major project funded by the Lily Foundation, he and Gary Phillips are engaged in research dealing with issues fundamental to contextual hermeneutics. Their special focus is on the accountability of white male teachers of the Bible and the effect of their teaching and research on students.
