Abstract

The paradox of human life is that man is both the dust of the earth and the reflection of the glory of God. Because man, Adam, is taken from the ground, there is real continuity between the earth and man. But what is meant by the image and likeness of God? One way of considering this question is by looking at the nature of man. The concept of the image of God involves the understanding that man is capable of entering into a relationship with God: a relationship of dependence, and yet fulfilling the purpose of his creation. Another way to consider the image of God in man, is by looking at man’s creation. This can be seen either as the start of a process, or as its completed state, when its purpose has been attained. In this view man is judged eventually not by what he is or by what he has been, but by what he is summoned to be, by his potentialities. Jesus, the son od David, is real man, as he is called to be, the true image of God. In him all the paradoxes of our humanity are expressed and resolved.
