Abstract

Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), Dean of St Patrick’s, Ireland, author of Gulliver’s Travels, to Lady Cartaret:“I know nothing of music, madam.  I would not give a farthing for all the music in the Universe.  For my own part I would rather say my prayers without it;  but as long as it is thought by the skilful to contribute to the dignity of Public Worship, by the blessing of God it shall never be disgraced by me, nor I hope by any of my successors ….”
