Abstract

THE DEMANDS OF PASTORAL CARE IN CRISIS OF POLITICAL VIOLENCEIn the current situation of crisis and conflict in South African society, there exists a dire need for pastoral care. After discussing the general requirement for constructive conflict management, the author concentrates on the current climate of political violence in the light of the theological debate about violence. He then develops a model for reconciliation in intergroup conflict and give practical guidelines for what he calls a programme for reconciliation. The conclusion is that churches have a vital role to play in this programme, but that they can only do so if they demonstrate the meaning of reconciliation in their own midst and in their active search for unity and community with all fellow believers
