Abstract

THE VALUE OF BIBLICAL STUDIES FOR THE ORDINARY READER OF THE BIBLEInterest in the (ordinary) reader of the Bible is on the increase, due to several reasons.  On the level of literary theory, the swing to pragmatics, I e speech act theory and reader’s response has stimulated this interest. Secondly, there is a widespread dissatisfaction with the results of the historical-critical approach, especially in third world countries. This has caused developments like interest-theology, with materialistic exegesis as an extreme example. A further phenomenon is the renewed interest in the historical setting of the Bible, exemplified by studies on the sociology of the New Testament. Lastly, the sharp increase in Bible study groups gives evidence of the increasing importance of the ordinary reader and the emergence of a do-it-yourself theology. The paper discusses the implications of these developments for the teaching of Biblical Studies and ends with a recommendation that the Society gives serious attention to the needs of the ordinary reader of the Bible.
